Hypermobility

Are you “double jointed”?

In reality, there is no such thing as “double joints.” Being “double jointed” is the layperson’s description for being hypermobile.

Hypermobility syndrome is estimated to affect 10–25% of the population to a varying degree. It is a disorder that allows the joints to extend beyond the normal range of motion. A common hypermobility syndrome is called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. It is commonly seen in athletes that participate in sports that involve a considerable amount of flexibility such as dancing and gymnastics.

So how do we test for hypermobility?

We use the Beighton scale. This is a well established indicator of hypermobility. Try the following tests to determine if YOU have hyper mobility syndrome.
