Does Running Lead To Hip and Knee Arthritis

Does running lead to knee and hip arthritis?

We hear so often from our patients that all the “pounding” of running or other similar activity in their youth has led to current knee or hip pain. That message is often touted by healthcare professionals. But is it true?

We know now that osteoarthritis is not purely a wear and tear condition. What does the research say? One meta-analysis (analysis of all available data) including more than 114,000 individuals, sought to find the association with running and hip/knee osteoarthritis occurrence. They found that recreational runners were 3x less likely (3.5%) to develop arthritis than age matched sedentary individuals (10.2%). Competitive runners (over 57 miles/week) were more likely to develop arthritis (13.3%). In other words, moderate volume(up to 57 miles/week) running was in fact joint protective! Next time, we will touch on some pain generators in the knee.
